All keys are programmed with a 16-bit customer ID and an 16-bit user ID, allowing the keys to be specific to a particular customer and site. The keys are also programmed with an 8-bit function code, defining the function of a key when it is used in the system, and a 32-bit serial number. Keys can be divided into two main groups:
- Customer Keys
- Debit key - Value is stored directly on the key in any denomination from 1 cent to $250. As the key is used in a key reader to make purchases, the value is deducted. A key can be recharged (value added) in a key programmer. Each debit key is programmed with a unique 32-bit serial number.
- Credit key - Credit keys do not store any value. Each key is programmed with a unique 32-bit serial number. As the key is used in a key reader to make purchases, the key serial number is stored in the reader, along with the time, date, and amount of the transaction. This information can be retrieved by the owner and used to bill the customer.
- Management Keys
- There are currently 65 different management keys. These keys allow the owner to perform such functions as change a unit's activation price, show and clear a unit's totals, and change a unit's ID. By default, key readers are programmed to accept management keys of any serial number. In the event a management key is lost or stolen, this default can be changed to force key readers to only accept management keys of a specific serial number.
